August

When I think I can’t go another step, when the midday heat smothers me, and I feel my body begin to curl like the edges of a fallen leaf, there you find me. The way water runs to its fellow, the path that every drop has gone before, you have cut your course and sought me out. Blackberries hidden in shadow on the fence row are now alight. Sweet corn more precious than gold (grown by sweat and grit) your brilliant success, it saves me. Because in my little yard the apples are beginning to ripen, and although the days are still long, the harvest trickles in, and I can feel the promise of autumn on the horizon. This is how I greet the days of August.
