Musings while Mucking:
There have been a lot of rainy days around here lately and on Tuesday morning I noticed a robin bathing in a puddle that had formed from a rut in the road. Later that evening I read a quote that's been hanging with me all week, "Don't pray for the rain to stop; pray for good fishing when the river floods." (Wendell Berry excerpt from The Mad Farmer Poems) The next day I was mulling over robins, rain patterns, and the importance of my own perspective while shoveling manure in the pouring rain. It makes no difference to the rain cloud whether it's brought me pleasure or grief. But I suppose what temperament it puts me in is my own to choose. I know a lot of farmers that spend hours of conversation griping about the weather. Maybe we all ought to just go fishing instead.
